I have a Word file saved to a USB drive. I have had it there for years without problems. Recently because I have new computer coming, I saved some programs downloaded from the net to that USB drive so they can be reinstalled but now when I try to open the Word file I get the message "Word cannot start the converter mswrd632" and the file open as scrambled eggs

The file is very important to me and yes I stupidly did not make a back up

MS Word program operates on file for all ofher Word files on the hard drive without a problem

I have tried everything that I know but nothing I do can open the file uncorrupted

HELP

Some of the patches to Word disabled older formats. There is a patch that "Reenables old word formats". I had to apply it. Check www.Micosoft.com

Best guess.

Thanks you for your thoughtfullness and efforts to assist but in this case al the file are the same age the only difference is their location and this has only occurred since I started saving downloadable programs direct to my USB (usuall on desk top)

I feel that when I un zip them they effectd the code in this file

I have since located program that had read the file and the data is still there but the Program is $100US that a lot of money

The file contians banking details and it is my way of isolating this data from the internet

But thanks agai I really appeciate your response

Use the forum to respond.

Zipping/unzipping can do strange things if the options aren't right.

Are you trying to open this file by double-clicking? Try using "OPEN" in Word and navigating to the USB drive.

Moving it or a copy of it to the system drive?

Yep tried that also

Using both the desk top and Drive C (my Main drive)

At one stage the Word program went looking for the "converter" and when unable to locate, asked me to insert the source Program Office 2003) CD which I did but still with no result

Apparrently not!

I could send you the file by email if you were prepred?

I am sure it is safe - just corrupt

That way you could see for yourself the circumstance

What do you think?

I really appreciate your offer but after I made this statement I realized that the file is actually all my bank account details including security codes so I guess I should not really be handing this out to complete stranger.

Being unable to fix the problem I have since started the long and arduous journey of recreating the document and at this stage are about 80% complete

Really appreciate your contact and offer thought

Kindest regards

Warren

I ran into a such problem some times, but I has not always been able to solve it. Some time ago, stumbled on a program that could help here by using different capabilities - repair corrupt word 2007 document (http://www.repairword2007document.com).

The problem was with a corrupt file doc. After rebooting, the file is not opened, used the recovery for word online (http://www.recoveryforword.com).
