View Full Version : Two stage vs single stage heat pumps
I need to purchase a split system, 5 ton heat pump for my house in Tampa Florida. I had been leaning toward a two-stage compressor, but have been advised that , unlike the smaller compressors, a 5 ton rated at 16 seer seldom actually achieves it and using a 2-stage compressor will only add about 0.3 seer to the actual results and not be worth the extra costs. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Two stage compressors recover faster. If you use a set-back theromostat with considerable set-back, the two stage will allow it to bring the residence to the desired temperature quicker. If you don't need the quicker recovery, or live in milder climate (as you do) it may not be worth the extra expense. (my opinion)
My question related to the 2 stage heat pump was more directed toward energy savings while in AC mode; not in heating, as heat use here is minimal. Is the energy savings in AC mode with a 2 stage compressor worth $1000 or so extra in equipment expense?
