I have recently returned to Australia after a year working in California on a J-1 work and travel visa.

A website I have attempted to lodge my tax return with has calculated that I owe the IRS USD658... Does that sound right?

The individual that I was traveling/living/working with, in the same situation as me received back ALL of her taxes... so why would I now owe money?

In 2009 I earned USD22,276, paid USD1691 in federal tax, and USD332 in state tax.

I appreciate your help.

On J-1 you file nonresident tax return for two years. You get deduction based on tax treaty between your country and the U.S.
