I'm looking for a book, a murder mystery involving women written by a woman. I don't have a title or an author. It was probably published in the 80's or early 90s.
It's about five female friends that were close in college. One of them is murdered while they are still in college and it was never solved. Then fast forward several years. The women are in their prime, living in New York City or the surrounding 'burbs.
One is a very likable, but insecure, overweight housewife with lots of regrets and an of a husband. She lives in Conn. - her husband commutes to the city. Her husband is cheating with a co-worker and leaves her. She has a son around 14 or 15. I think her name was Dinah.
One is married to the perfect guy and has a great life - she's rich, beautiful and does a lot of high-end charity functions. She is definitely the main character. She's smart, likeable, compassionate. She is sexually assaulted while volunteering at a men's shelter by a homeless man. She tells no one.
One is an "artsy", flightly woman who has a series of doomed relationships, sleeps around, uses sex to de-focus from her insecurity. I remember she had long, wild hair and dressed in long, flowing gauzy skirts and scarves.
The fourth is a single, successful, straight-up type A personality over-achiever, workaholic. She is emotionally cut off from others, cold, anti-social, analytical. I think she was something like a corporate lawyer. She only lavishes affection on her two dogs lives in a high-rise apartment.
The book opens with the assault at the men's shelter. From there strange and horrible things start happening to them all... Mrs. Conn. Loses her son in a bizarre swimming accident, he is on the school swim team and drowns during an evening solo practice. The cold lawyer-type has her beloved pets killed (Corgi's I think) in a particular gruesome manner. They are slaughtered and laid out like they were being served for dinner. You definitely get the feeling that one of them is doing this to the others, and is slowly coming undone...
The title had a flower name in it and I think it's Lily. At the end the killer is driving very fast in her car with bunches of these flowers in the passenger seat. The flowers are significant... I think the girl murdered in college was named "Lilly".
The author is a woman. That's all I remember.
