It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, but I will do my best to explain it. The story picks up when the male protagonist (late 20's) is being hypnotized by his friends (maybe his girlfriend?). There is a scene here where he puts a safety pin through his hand, doesn't bleed, and seems to experience no pain. Something goes wrong while under hypnosis, and he seemingly goes insane. There is a scene where he is either in a dream or again being hypnotised and he finds himself in an old movie theater or something like that. His seat flies up and drifts slowly to the front where he is confronted by some dark spirit. In the end he destroys the chimney (maybe in the basement?) and finds the dead body of the negative spirit.
