I had an accident Saturday. I was (for some reason) storing my nail polish in glass vases on the top shelf in my bathroom. I grabbed one, it slipped, I caught it, it shattered. I went to the E.R. scared to have stitches (cause I never had before) & left wishing for just stitches. I'll be having surgery March 2nd to repair/reconnect the nerves & tendon in my left thumb.
If anyone has a similar story, please share your feelings and advice.
Also, does anyone know how long I will have stitches after surgery?

Mostly all is going to depend on how you heal. Also the region of the cut is important because the higher up it is the tougher it can get because of oxygen issues. Sometimes they have to put 2 fingers together for blood flow. Im sure yours is not going to be like that. But Im mentioning it because fingers can be tough sometimes.

Its right at the bottom of finger, at crease. What do you mean put two fingers together?

Feb 26, 2010, 06:47 PM
Well what it sounds like it is. They cut a patch open on one finger and graft it to the other but only cut 3 sides and sewing the fingers together. Then when its healed they split them apart. It not in your case its for more extreme ones near the finger tips.

It's my thumb, I don't think that would even work...

Yours isn't the type of injury they would do that to. Your safe. And from where you say it is it shouldn't be too bad. The only thing that will take getting used to is that they might splint your thumb for a week or so to keep from stretching open the wound. You'd make a good hitchhiker :)

It's been splinted for 6 days already, ugh...

I have an embarrassing story for you CM.
I was at an outside patio with some friends, drinking a little more then I should have been. I was walking down the steps to the bar, with 2 glass bottles in my hand. When I fell down all 3 steps, landed on my face, the beer bottles broke one slit my wrist, the other one slit open my ring and middle finger. There were 3 boys behind me laughing hysterically and pointing at me. I was forcibly removed from the bar, without so much as even an "are you okay"? I hadn't even had a chance to pick myself up when I felt these 2 huge hands on my shoulders throwing me off the patio. My boyfriend had to rush me to the ER to have glass removed from my wrists and fingers, a long lecture on suicide by some counselors, and stitched in fingers.
They only kept my stitches in for one week. But I hope my story made you feel better!

It's okay, I laugh at it now. I thought it might make you chuckle! It is kind of funny, except I almost lost a tooth, and had to spend 4 hours in the ER, and have 2 nasty scars on my wrist and fingers, and broke my glasses... hmmm... not sounding so funny any more...

But on the up side, I never did get my glasses fixed, and I went to the eye doctors a year later, and he said my vision had IMPROVED, I was almost at 20/20 vision! So it was a happy ending after all! :)

Wow. I hope I get a happy ending! ((wow, sounds dirty)). Surgery went well, my pain level is about a 5, 3 right after meds. But I'm so glad we can start the healing process!! Woooooootttt!! Physical therapy starts in two days. Not so excited about that one.

About a year or so ago, my sister slit her hand open and needed several stitches. She was just doing dishes. The plate she was washing broke in her hand for no apparent reason and slit the palm of her hand clear across. She ended up with several stitches, but no surgery. I think they only kept the stitches in for a couple weeks.
I had stitches in my leg when I was 8. I still have a very visible scar, but it doesn't really bother me. I had to have the stitches in for 6-8 weeks. Then again, that was in 94, medicine has improved since then.
Now, how are you not familiar with fonzi? We were born in the same year, and I was still raised watching happy days reruns. Watched the spin-offs, laverne and shirley and mork and mindy, too.
PLEASE tell me you know mork and mindy. It's classic robin williams. I think it's robin williams before he became a household name, but I might be wrong. I wish they still showed it on reruns. Then again, I don't own a TV, so I guess I should just find it online.
Did you know that happy days was the first show to spawn spin-offs? It is also one of the few that had a spin-off become as successful as the original show. The phrase 'jumping the shark' was also spawned by happy days. Towards the end of the series the ratings were falling, so they had several episodes in Hawaii, one of which fonzi literally jumped a shark on waterskis, wearing his leather jacket and everything.

It was the first one that they called the sequel a "spin-off." The first one that I can think of off hand was a spin-off of "Petticoat Junction": "Green Acres." Petticoat Junction was what they called a "sister show" to "The Beverly Hillbillies."

I didn't realize petticoat junction was related to green acres. Learn something new every day.

Sorry to hear about your hand CM!
My mother was using a Bamix a few years ago to make some soup, and she was taking the attachment off the bottom of the wand and it restarted. Whizzzzz. Aaaarggh! Result? Mashed, sliced fingers - index finger and thumb.
It took her some weeks to completely heal after the surgery, but the cuts were jagged and very deep.
