Hi, I have a 12 year old diamond 80 heater that has never had any problems until this winter. The fan started running all the time so I called a repair service. They replaced a safety switch and did a maintenance on the heater. That fixed the initial problem but after 2 days the fan started making odd noises. The first repair guy had taken it apart and took it outside and hosed it down. I called the repair place and a different guy came back and said the first guy put the fan back together wrong. He fixed it and also re-did the maintenance and cleaned up around the heater. Now the fan works but there is a very odd smell ( kind of sweet? Chemical? ) that comes out whenever I run the heater. It triggers alergies in me and my daughter. I left the heater off for a few days thinking that whatever it was might dissapate then on a warmer day I left the windows open and ran the fan all day. That did seem to help a little but didn't get rid of the smell altogher. I ran the heater for about 30 minutes a couple of days ago and we still start coughing after it has run for a while. I have PG&E come and check it and the guy said he could smell something but couldn't tell what it was. He tested for gas and carbon monoxide and said there wasn't any. I also bought a carbon monoxide detector and it has not gone off. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm a little reluctant to call the same company back out. Thanks for any help you can provide.
