Just upgraded my water well which required that we run chlorine through the pipes for disinfection. Same week, ceiling started leaking around fan vent. Leak mysteriously stopped for several days and has now started again, same place. When we turn the water off at the pump, the leak continues. We have been running water from every faucet in the house including rarely used upstairs tub --- only to clear off chlorine -- never use it for showers. We collect a large tub of water every 8 hours from the leak.

We haven't found any water at the base of the upstairs toilet, upstairs tub was recently caulked nor did we see any leaking beneath the bathroom sink or from the hot water that heats our baseboards.

FYI -- We bought the house eight years ago and it appears there have been some pinhole leaks in the copper pipes before -- house was built in 1954.

Because our current leak stopped once on it's own, does it mean this is a drain line rather than water line leak? If I add food coloring to the toilet tank, will that help me trace the leak to the toilet? Are there any other tests that would help me to identify the cause of the leak?

If it's a pressure leak the leak will continue until the pressure's bled out of the system.
Adding food coloring to the toilet tank won't help in this case. My bet's on a pinhole leak in the copper pipes. Open up the ceiling and check. Regards, Tom
