There are 8 "historical" paths in yoga. Yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi.
There are also 8 different TYPES of yoga: Bhakti, Karma, Jnana, Raja, Mantra, Laya, Tantra and Hatha. Yoga is typically misinterpreted to be posing and meditations...
Bhakti yoga is prescribed in our present age (of Kali) to be the best, because it encompasses all other yogas because it is direct and loving service to the Lord. One can achieve spiritual world in this lifetime by surrendering himself to God (bhagavad-gita 2.7). Other yogic paths can take thousands of lifetimes to perfect.
