Hi,

In 2009, I moved from F1 to H1. So I would be filing tax return as non-resident. However, I purchased a new car in 2009. Will I be eligible for new car tax credit. If yes, what is the equivalent of Schedule L for 1040NR?

Thanks

You do not do schedule L. Instead take the new car deductions as itemized deduction on schedule A. Your U.S. Tax Return: What's New for 2009 (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2009/04/whats-new-for-2009.html)

Thanks MukatA for the quick response. Schedule A for 1040 has provision for taking new car deductions (line #7). However for the Schedule A in 1040NR form, there is no provision for taking this new car deduction. So, how can a non-resident take benefit of the new car deduction?

Read instructions to schedule A (Form 1040). There is a worksheet for line 7.
If it does not work, let me know and will do some research.

Yeah, MukatA I read those instructions. But they are applicable only to those who file 1040. I will be filing 1040NR. How can I attach Schedule A with 1040NR?

You need to call IRS and find out.
