Dear Tax expert,

I came in US on DEC 30, 2008. My wife and son (6 years old) joined with me on 8th Aug, 2009. I am in J1 visa and dependents are in J2. Wife also works in UNMC. My questions are,

1. How can I apply for child tax credit for my son?
2. Before applying for tax return, whether I have to get tax id for my son?
3. Or can I apply for tax id (for my son) together with tax return file?

I expect your valuable reply, which would be very helpful for me, at the earliest.
Regards

On J1 visa you must file nonresident tax return and form 8843 for 2009. Your spouse will also file separate nonresident tax return. Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents (http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/03/us-tax-filing-requirements-for-non.html)
