So my sheltie just swallowed a pork rib bone about as big as my middle finger and less than one inch long. He's around 25 pounds and is 3 years old. I'm not sure what to do since its very late at night and I'm about to go to sleep so I can't stay up to keep an eye on him. He seems to be acting fine and running around and playing but he swallowed it about 20 minutes ago. I gave him some bread already, but I have no idea what I should do.

Feed him some cotton wool balls soaked in water (You will have to force feed) and some bread.
They will help cushion the bones and hopefully prevent them from piercing anything vital.
Keep a very close eye on him and if he starts acting lethargic, constipated, drooling excessively or any odd behaviour in general you need to get him to the vet right away.

Dogs bellies are designed to digest bones. The deadly part about bones being fed to dogs is due to the bones being cooked. The bones can splinter in the stomach and digestive tract. Keep an eye on him. He can pass it with no problems... Ive never tried Shazzies idea, but it seems like a good idea...
Good luck

I would just keep a close eye on him, like Lucky said their bellies are designed to digest bones. I know one of my dogs ate a whole rib bone, not even chewing it once. We were all sitting at the table eating supper, one slipped out hit the floor and it was gone before anyone even looked down! Shaz's idea definitely works, and makes for some interesting doggy art work in the yard later! Just make sure to keep a close eye, and ANY unusual behaviour, take him to the vet ASAP!
