And today, more and more people get their news online, and fewer people read the actual paper. Unless you're in a tiny town where everyone knows everyone and still relies on the paper for local news.

Traditionally, individual thanks for family and friends should be cards, and general thanks to hospital staff should be a collective gift. Fruit baskets are kind of passe', but home made cookies are a lot of work for someone fresh out of the hospital. You might volunteer to help her.
