Okay, so I decided that I want to get my tongue pierced, I'm 15 - my dad approves of it so I don't need to worry about begging to him as he has it done as well. I'm thinking of getting it done at the very beginning of the summer holidays so it has a good time to heal before school starts again at which point ill be able to wear a retainer.. but I need some help on the damages, I know that oral piercings are the worst offenders for infections and tooth/gum problems. In my family there's a history of gum recession and gum disease but luckily my teeth and gums are perfectly healthy and always have been! I was wondering if a bioflex/bioplast barbell would improve the situation so it's a thin flexible material which isn't so heavy as metal, I've had my monroe and bottom lip pierced before and the metal was just too much on my gums so I took them out but in my nose I wear a bioplast nose stud and it helped speed up healing and is light and feels great to wear.. I don't smoke and I have the odd glass of wine at dinner every so often.. so my questions are:

1. will bioplast/bioflex barbells reduce gum recession and tooth problems
2. what's the pain scale (yes I know everyone's is different but I've got a pretty high tolerance for pain as I've had my belly button, tragus, helix, nose, 3 in each lobe - stretching one of the three, my monroe and lip)
3. how long will it be before I can change to a shorter bar/retainer for school
4. what will help with the swelling as soon as it's pierced
5. what should/shouldnt I eat after getting it done
6. is it really noticeable that you have a tongue piercing when you speak if you have a retainer in

Your help will be appreciated greatly, thanks!!

I got mine done and it doesn't hurt very much. Lightly bite your tongue. Feel that? That's it! The healing time is about 4-6 weeks. So no kissing, oral sex, any other exchange of bodily fluids during this time. Avoid spicy, acidic, and salty foods. "swish" with 1part listerine (original, no extra crap in it!) 1 part distilled water twice a day for two weeks. Get a new toothbrush. Though it's tempting- don't play with it! The "crusties" also tend to be darker with tongue piercings. Don't be worried. It's normal. As long as you don't clang it on your teeth or chew on it, it will not have an affect on your gums or teeth. A white film may appear on your tongue or roof of your mouth. This is because the piercing is changing how your tongue sits in your mouth. Gently brush it away with luke warm water on a soft tooth brush.

****tip: don't talk much the first few days. And the best thing for it is honestly milkshakes! It's soothing to the swelling, delicious, and if it gets in your tongue hole, it doesn't hurt!

NEVER smoke for at least a few weeks after getting it done! Small particles can get in and cause an infection. If you do not smoke, eat things like apple sauce and mashed potatoes, and follow all my instructions. You should be fine!

I'm getting barbed wire around my wrist, cover up some old scars. She's getting the statue of a mother dragon and her egg I have, beautiful, but inside the egg instead of a baby dragon, it's me and my brother's names.
