How do you know when your ready to get a job starting at 14?

Do you help your parents around the house with chores assigned to you? Do they pay you for doing work around the house? Do you help out neighbors and friends with odd jobs indoors or outdoors -- cutting the grass, snow shoveling, gardening, babysitting?
