My transmission is making a very loud noise. This morning it would only shift into reverse. I added 1 quart of transmission fluid. It shifts but its still loud. What could be wrong?

Automatic transmissions are the weak link in FWD vehicles. They need to be maintained really well. Ford recommends changing the transmission fluid (Mercon V) and filter every 30,000 miles. I take it a step further and only use full-synthetic ATF, while still adhering to Ford's maintenance recommendations.
I would drop and clean the pan, change the filter, and refill with ATF. During the process, examine the pan for signs of trouble. Here's how to do a great job servicing your transmission:

This is all the average person can do to prolong the life of the transmission. Still, it's quite a bit and it works for me. If this doen't improve the situation, you are likely looking at a rebuild ($2,500).
