After a heavy rain 4 days ago I found a water spot on the ceiling about two feet from the front door. There wasn't any water found immediately next to the front door. The spot is downstairs with the water heater above it on the upstairs. There is no water leaking in the water heater closet. I have ran all other appliances in the house and the water spot stayed the same size. It rained again yesterday and the water spot got a bit larger. Could it be possible there is a pipe leaking or could it be due the rain getting in the house between floors? Would I need to call a plumber or contractor to look at this?

Welcome teachch

From your discription, does not sound like a pipe isleaking. If it was a pipe the water spot would be growing all the time.

The easiest way to test for a siding or roof leak is with 2 people.

Have one person stay inside near spot.

The other person, running water from a hose on siding. Start at height of ceiling. Run water on that area about 5 minutes.

If no change on water spot inside house, move hose up about a foot.

Keep doing this until water spot starts to grow. This will tell u that siding is leaking below the line u are running water.

If still no sign inside, move onto roof and start a bottom. Move up roof at same rate as did on siding.

Once located where water is coming in, should be pretty easy to repair.

If need help for repair let us know.

Good luck
