One day my husband was making my three year old daughet learn by heart the ayatul kursy.. and other suras.. he became angry on me that I don't teach children.. for which I gave him answer that I don't want to make them parrots but want them to follow every thg by understanding it..
He discussed that with his father in front of me.. and he gave me a tough time by saying some bad thgs about my father too.. he totally rejected my way of teacing my children to know and understand about islam.. tell me who is right.. me or my inlaws

Well you have a tough one there. There are two types of learning, understanding and knowledge. Anyone can recite the Koran, but few will understand the message there. You teach understanding by example and experience, and you learn knowledge through memorization. Knowledge is key in understanding, but not the other way around.

I think you need a little of both to be successful in life.

Don't force your child to byheart anything. But you can do one thing. Say your prayers in front of your child every day. He will by heart it unconsiously ( without his knowledge). Ask your husband also to do say prayers in front of your child. Small children like to copy their parents. You can also use cassets or cds to hear in bed times.

Childhood indoctrination is cruel in my opinion. Children should learn educational basics in a fun way.
