Lost volume icon tried everything found a box but cannot check volume

Are you talking about the volume check box in sound icon in control panel? If so, these are grayed out?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any Software or Hardware that you installed or setup.

I had a virus once that would randomly stop the "Windows Audio" service...
