View Full Version : Puppies as prizes in pageants :(

I'm very upset.

I've started a thread before about the pageant shows on TV for little girls. I don't agree with pageants for children. To me it instils the belief that they're only as special as their looks that being pretty is the most important thing. But that's not the reason for this thread.

I was watching it today, because there was nothing else on and I was shocked when they announced that the winners of that competition would win a puppy! Yes, a puppy! No legitimate breeder would ever sell puppies to someone that would give them away as a prize to a competition.

Yes the kids want the puppy. Of course they do, the puppies are adorable. One of the mothers on the show was interviewed (as they usually do on the show) and all she had to say was "Lord help me if she wins the puppy".

So, these puppies are being given away as prizes to people that aren't ready for a puppy, probably don't want a puppy and aren't necessarily willing to care for a puppy.

Do they have a kennel at home, bowls, food, money for vaccines and vet care? Why would they? They weren't looking to purchase a puppy, it's a prize!

I'm shocked about this. I can't just let this go. I will be looking into contacting the producers of the show and expressing my concern. Hopefully this can get me contact information to the pageant people that make the decisions to do this. I'll see what happens.

Is anyone else upset about this? Am I overreacting?

Its not over reacting. But Im sure that they had announced it ahead of time to the contestants. The same problem goes on every year at easter and people give rabbits as pets. To me a pet is personal and not something to be given away as a prize.

Just when you think the pageants have reached a new low ,they find a new way to be stupid.

Did you ever see that little girl who is always on with her dog that she throws around ?

These parents should be brought to task for what they do!

I detest everything about it! Now I have another to add to the list of many why I think this is wrong ,just wrong on SO many levels.

Sadly that's why so many rabbits end up in the shelter, because they were either gifts, prizes or an impulse buy because "aw, it's soooo cute!"

They're complex pets. They need specialized care. I have yet to meet a pet store employee that knows diddly squat about rabbits. My 7 year old knows more then they do.

A puppy is even more work then a bunny. The cost of caring for a puppy is also a lot higher. The vet bills alone in the first year can be astronomical. It's unfair to give these living breathing animals away as prizes.

Give away a stuffed animal. No care required and if the stuffing gets ripped out you just shove it back in, sew it up and voilą, nobody dies. ;)

I haven't seen the dog throwing girl. That would just make me that much more angry and trust me, I'm plenty angry already.

I would be willing to wager that the majority of puppies given away as prizes will end up in shelters.

Just another level of concern to add to all the rest.

When will people realize?

Rabbits aren't that hard you just have to watch their diets. And you can take them for a walk on a leash too :)

Hopefully we can stretch the advocates of animals even further to help them to force a new legislation.

I do believe they are overworked trying to fight this horrible ignorance and I do think we will get better and make the penalties more severe.

When we hit people in their pocketbook, that's when they pay attention!

Thank you Paris Hilton for that *dog as fashion* statement .Ugh!
It's a crazy world when you think that these poor kids are going to do well with the mindset they are being taught. Tsk,Tsk!

Alty, don't go any further with the pageant people. Get their contact info, maybe even misdirect them with Sydney, then forward the contact info to the SPCA. If this doesn't qualify as "cruelty to animals" I need to find out what language I speak.

Rabbits arent that hard you just have to watch thier diets. And you can take them for a walk on a leash too :)

They aren't hard if you know their diets and their other needs. For instance, did you know that most vets have not one clue how to care for a rabbit. When I was looking for a vet to neuter Cotton one vet told me to give no food and water 24 hours before the operation. This is done with most animals because they can often vomit after surgery and if no one is there, they can choke on their own vomit.

Well, rabbits don't have a gag reflex. They physically cannot vomit. When I told the vet this his response was "hmm, didn't know that". What? You're a vet! :(

Also, did you know that rabbits teeth grow constantly? If they don't have something in their cages, or diet, to grind down their teeth then it needs to be done by a vet.

Do you know the difference between a rabbit and a hare? Most people don't. Heck, most people think that rabbits are rodents. They're not, they're lagomorphs.

Don't get me started. I could talk all day about rabbits. ;)

All of you have given me great suggestions. Trust me, I will get to the bottom of this and I won't stop until I get some answers or at least create awareness that this is going on.

The only ones that will suffer are the puppies. The kids, well, that's another post. Don't even get me started about how I feel about child pageants. :(

Time to make dinner. I'll be back. :)

My dogs are my family... to me that is like entering a competition to win a brother or sister.

Dogs and puppies are not possessions or prizes, they are living, breathing, feeling creatures.

I have been getting slammed a lot lately because I show dogs and they are nothing more than money makers for us... that couldn't be farther from the truth but it's impossible to make some people see that.
I mean, I pay for the dog, I have to feed it, vet it, pay entry fee for shows, register it with the local council yearly, pay my own membership to the canine council. If I happened to breed it MIGHT recoup some of the costs if the dog has a large litter but when you think about the fact that the dog cost nearly $2000 then you have to pay a $1000 stud fee and you have been feeding and vetting the dog for 2+ years, AND having to pay for the puppies food and vet care...

Bleck, I'm babbling now but it gets me angry.

Stop trying to eat my rabbits!

Could you really eat this?

That's my baby Cotton. He weighs around 1 pound soaking wet. Not worth skinning and cooking him for a few bites.

Also, he's litter box trained and tame as can be. He's just a big sucky bunny, loves to cuddle, loves to sit on my lap and watch TV.

Tell me, could you really eat him? Could you? Say it isn't so!

It's actually very healthy, not only for them. Our dog (when I was younger) used to follow our rabbit around eating it's poo. I was disgusted! We mentioned it to our vet and he told us that it's actually very healthy, the it will help the dog with his digestion as well.

This is a serious and overlooked problem. Owning a pet should be something that is planned and giving pets as prizes can lead to neglect and animals ending up in shelters. This practice should be banned, I would suggest sending letters to local government if this is going on where you live.

It's a US show, I'm not in the US. Still, I don't think it's right, and I will be writing an email to the producers of the show and see where that leads.

I agree Earl, this is a really bad idea, for many reasons. The only ones suffering here are the dogs.

I'm coming into this late so I don't know what happened prior to today (with the exception of a few posts) BUT this is against the Law in NY - I was one of the people who very actively campaigned to stop the practice of animals as prizes anywhere, any time - and that includes rabbits at fairs and carnivals.

Write your State Legislators or, in Canada, your rep.

Arrests ARE made in NY when the law is broken.

I realize it's in the US - I was simply stating what the law in NY is and suggesting that anyone who objects to animals as prizes write to their Legislators and insist that a law be passed banning the practice OR that the existing law (if there is an existing law) be enforced.

Live animals as prizes are not limited to TLC shows - I protested the practice at fairs, fund raisers and so forth. A gun raffle was recently shut down where I live because they were auctioning off a hunting dog - and the State Police arrived.

Great idea Judy. Not one that's available to me, but still, great idea. I doubt the US government would care what a Canadian has to say. I will write though, who knows? ;)

I'm just appalled that this is going on. These are living breathing beings and to give them away as prizes is wrong. A dog is a very personal choice, not something to be entered into lightly and not something that should be foisted on anyone.

This is not the only time I've seen this being done on that show. It's shocking. The thing that bothers me most is that I know for a fact that no breeder would offer puppies as prizes. These puppies are most likely puppy mill pups or from a backyard breeder, two practices which I'm also trying to put an end to.

There's so many things wrong with this. It makes me so mad and sad. Only the puppies will suffer. It's not right. :(

Likely they're some sort of advertising comp from a big chain pet store. That's how most TV prizes are acquired, I'm given to understand.

I thought I was going to get beat the other day, I was at a major hotel and they had just finished a pagent I guess, a bunch of 5 to 12 year olds dressed like street walkers in my opinion. I was asked by one lady ( guess bragging about her child) what I thought, and I told her exactly what I thought, that it was shameful and I was sorry she could not be charged with child abuse, well guess that's why I should just answer online.

But here where I live it is illegal to give dogs or cats as prizes at all.
** does not list gold fish but it should also.

Aurora_Bell
Feb 21, 2010, 06:21 PM
It really is sad to see those girls dressed the way they do. Luckily inmy town we do not have pagents of any kind. Opps wait, we have the miss pumpkin patch, which is not based on looks at all, but how well you grew a pumpkin. They have mr. pumpkin patch as well, but no one particiapates. But they do a lot with the 4h. For the boys. I think those gold fish that they give away at fairs is cruel as well Fr_Chuck, although I would rather see those feeder fish go the bunnies they used to give away. One year, (I was still very young) I remember they were giving away budgie birds as prizes. I remember a bunch of kids trying to set them free, but I think their wings were clipped.
I refuse to bring my daughter to the circus's they hold. It really pains me to think of those animals lives. I will not support things like that!

Well I hate those fish for another reason, two years ago my son won one, in a pastlic bag, so off to the pet store and a tank, gravel, filter, food and more latter ( about 100 dollars) that free fish was costly.

And now of course it has grown ( my fault at guess) now it is a 50 gallon tank, many fish, plants and a giant filter. ** I did get a beta fish that I had always wanted and it is sitting by me right now in the old small tank.

Did you see my picture of Gordon? In the members pets page? That was a .58 cent feeder gold fish.

I have a 27 cent feeder fish that the pet store promised me wouldn't live more then 2 weeks. Five years later he's been through 3 tank changes and he's still growing.

He'll outlive all of us.

Yup mine is 10! Literally the size of a samll cat, the only fish I have been able to keep alive... I think it's because he lives at my parents house... hence the thread I started "fish killer."

Aurora, I feel your pain.

I figured that since I had to get a 20 gallon tank for Goldie (don't laugh, my kids named him) I might as well get more fish. After all, one fish in a 20 gallon tank is kind of sad.

All but one died. It's a bottom feeder. Now it's him and Goldie, together to the end. I give up with the rest, I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't be that wrong, Goldie and Fang (ya, Fang, I know, my husband named him) are still alive.

Maybe I should get another goldfish. What am I saying!

Aurora, I have 3 dogs, 4 rabbits, a bird and 2 fish.

I just watched a show called hoarders where the lady had 76 cats, only 41 of them alive. Ya, there were corpses everywhere. The house was in such a state that she didn't even realize there were dead cats (some of them died years ago) among the live ones.

The whole house was covered with cat pee and poo, 3 inches deep. She thought she was saving them.

When they cleaned out her garage they found another 37 corpses and a live skunk!

I'm afraid if I get one more pet, even a fish, I might head down that road. Wait... I take care of my pets. All of them are vet checked yearly or on a need to basis. I even paid $300 to neuter a rabbit!

If I get another pet and hubby kicks me out can I live with you? ;)

I'm only kidding. I hope you know that.

Yes I knew that! OK sad story... here in NS in a place called Cape Breton there was a "spca" branch called celtic pets. The Cape Breton Post: Local News | Celtic Pets was subject of multiple investigations (http://www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm?sid=106575&sc=145)
Google it. I can't even bring myself to tell the story. I have fostered 3 dogs that came from that "shelter". 95% of the cats we have( in our shelter) are from there. It is sad. Can't think of anything else to describe it but sad, disgusting, wrong. I was there when they took the animals out of Gail benoits house here in NS
Information about Gail Benoit - Puppy Broker in Nova Scotia (http://dogkisser.ca/gail_benoit.html)

Now I am hijacking your thread! Sorry!
I know you are a good pet owner. It shows in all your posts. You talk about your animals, like most people talk about their kids (I mean that as an extremely positive thing, I am just lacking the words I need to express it)!
And yes you and all you fur fur babies can come! Lol

I feel the cat issue, the older lady across the street had at least 27 cats last year, but it got worst, their next door neighbor starting setting wire animal traps and catching the cats when they were outside, we don't know where they went or what he did with him, she is down to about 5 cats the best I can tell now.

Animal control said nothing they could do, the "traps" were not proof of anything ( sorry?? )

Ugg were they humane traps or were they killing the cats?
The woman across from me has 7 cats now, 5 females 2 males.
I can hear them allnight long. We will be over run by kittens this spring. I volunteer at the only local SPCA here in this town and we are so over run it's not even funny. I have reported her to the animal control, but unfortuantly it is not illegal to have multiple cats and not have them spayed or neutered. |I feel torn, I want them to have food and a warm place, but how can I support her by feeding her cats?
I feel like I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. I have an older dog house that I have recently insulated with hay, but I feel like I am just helping with this problem. I can't afford to get the neighbours cats spayed or neutered, but I can't stand to watch them starv and be out all night long with no where warm to sleep.

They were caught alive, but I don't know what happened after that, he was either killing them ( my opinoin) or he was just dumping them on the side of the road somewhere else.
But don't know beyond I just stayed out of it.

I reported several dog issues to animal control today, but not holding my breath they will even come look.

I really hate to hear that Fr_Chuck... I hate that there was a situation that needed to be reported. I think killing them or dropping them off on the side of the road is pretty much the same thing. It's so horrible I really wish that people had to be screend to own animals. I wish there was more reprecussion to those who are abusing the animals. I know how you feel, but I know what it's like when your hands are tied, and there is no rrom and all that'seft is to be euthanized. It's a hard place and a rock. And being stuck in the middle is the worst situation to ever be in.

On the show I watched animal control was involved, they were thinking about charging the old lady with animal cruelty.

They said that 50 unaltered cats can turn into 1000 cats within a year. They breed worse then bunnies.

Sadly all the cats on this show had to be killed. They all had a lung infection that is not treatable. Even the one week kittens they found had to be euthanised. :(

I like watching RSPCA Animal Rescue, it's basically like the show they have in the US with the 'animal cops'

There are a few sad stories, but mostly happy ones.
There was a lady on the last episode who had over 100 poodles, cavaliers and cavoodles (hence my signature)
They were horribly matted and they had just been left to breed freely. The puppies were not cared for.

They lived in 2 rooms of the house, with 4 dog beds covered in feces against each wall.

15 dogs had to be euthanised due to health and behavior problems, but 85 dog were successfully rehomed!

There was one dog (a standard poodle) who's fur was so matted and covered in feces that it almost looked like deformed lumps of skin.
He was fixed up, put in a foster home for a month and he is now living in his forever home :)

Aww I love it when I hear happy endings! I have a hard time watching those shows. :(
I know that animal hoarding is a 'real' thing but I think 99.9% of the people who have this supposed disease are really out there just trying to make a buck. That woman Zonda from Celtic pets said she is suffering from AH, but why sell them? To me that doesn't sound like hoarding behaviour. I think she suffers from "Iwant more money and I don't care how I get it" syndrome.
