As I was heading down the road this moring, my car los power and would turn over, but not start. Thank god for AAA. Repair shop ran diagnostic check, stated that the distribution box and ignition coil to be replaced, cost with labor $579. I am not all that smart about the details of cars, but know some things. Shop stated this could not have been prevented, but what happen was that the rotar in distribution cap fires in certain sequence, and down through wires and plugs to burn fuel. However (especially with the high milage I have on my car) that the igination coil misfired and threw out the sequence out of wack and sent high voltage back into distribution box and fried my distribution box. Does this sound right, and could I have prevented this before it happened. I keep up the maintenance on my car and was never told about this. Thanks so much for any advise anyone could give.

I recommend replacing these problematic components every 120,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first. Stuff just happens.. . I don't think you could have prevented it, unless you followed my advice and proactively replaced these parts. Following the link, above, you should be able to replace the items in 45 minutes. Parts are available at most auto parts stores.

If the problem persists, you will have to replace the distributor housing and install your new ICM and coil. This is only if the internal distributor sensors (CKP, CYP, and/or TDC) were damaged. I only recommend Honda genuine distributor housings, since over 50% of new aftermarket distributors for Hondas, at AMHD, have not worked. Aftermarket ICMs and coils are fine, however. Other options:

. Buy a replacement distributor from you local salvage yard for around $55.

. Buy a Honda genuine distributor housing online and install your own aftermarket ICM and coil. Contact College Hills Honda, Wooster, OH (888/244-6632). They have very good prices for a Honda dealer.
