Hi,
Putting good gas into dirty carb will do that. What model machine/engine are we discussing?
Peace,

Hi,
Okay, you have a Tecumseh engine that is an HSSK50-68338N with a 632107A carb that uses a 31840 repair kit. The operators manual is at:
http://www.managemyhome.com/mmh/lis_pdf/OWNM/L0909323.pdf
And the repair manual is at:
http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine-specs/tecumseh/Tecumseh_L-Head_Engines_Service_Information.pdf
Peace,
Clarke

Thanks, yeah I had found the manual on line but that repair manual is great. As I am a critical care nurse and stuck at home due to big snow, I am going to keep working on it as far as I can go with the manual. Worst case: I get a professional to finish the job (if I ever shovel out of here) Thanks

Hi,
Be aware that there is a tiny hole in the main jet that is diagonal and feeds the low speed circuits. The main jet must be diassembled to stick a small diameter wire through it. The jet must be disassemble first. Hint: the wire that attaches the inlet needle to the float works great. Be aware that the pointed (open) end must point toward the air intact when reinstalled. That brass washer protects the o-ring from the spring so be sure it is between them.
Peace,
Clarke

Well, anyway if you put a little gas in the carb or spark plug hole (spray carb cleaner is best) and it sputters, then it's carb related.

Also, make sure the fuel valve is open. That will do it every time.

You can SOMETIMES salvage this sort of problem by draining the tank and adding a small amount of gas and seafoam carb cleaner (any liguid carb cleaner might work) and try to get it to run. Motor Tune-Up Fuel Injector Carburetor Cleaner, 16oz - Seafoam SF-16 - iboats.com (http://www.iboats.com/Motor-Tune-Up-Fuel-Injector-Carburetor-Cleaner-16oz-Seafoam/dm/view_id.163271)

What happens is the fuel valve/needle sticks open or closed and the carb either floods or doesn't get any gas.

This happens when you don't use fuel stabilizer like Sta-bil in your fuel and don't stop the engine by turning off the fuel and letting the fuel runout.

If I spray carb starter in the intake it starts right up but cuts out in a few seconds.

That's typical of a fuel problem where is where we are going with this.

BTW Pep Boys has Seafoam.

So the suggestion is, to try to get it to run on nearly all carb cleaner. Drain the tank. Add some seafoam liquid carb cleaner and a small amount of gas. Try to start on carb cleaner.

If successful try to run completely out.

Otherwise, you have to disassemble and clean. The likely failed part is the fuel valve in the carb.

Here is another location of the exploded carb view: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=632107&productCategoryId=1500185&brandId=0171&modelName=CARBURETOR&diagramPageId=00001&documentId=00008100&pop=flush&searchCount=1

The likely problem is item #12. It needs to be cleaned.
