My "older" sister (in age not responsibility) and her boyfriend have two girls (ages 5 and 1) whom they don't really take care of. They have both come over to my house numerous times unbathed and in clothes that are filthy. I have tired confronting my sister about taking better care of the girls but she says nothing is wrong and she can handle it. When I went over to see my nieces the last few days they both look horrible their hair is never combed and I don't think that my sister has given them a bath since I did last weekend. During my visit I learned that my niece has fallen behind in her kindergarten class and instead of trying to help their daughter catch up my sister was planning a 5 day trip to Vegas and her boyfriend was planning a 5 day trip to Miami. My fiancé would like to take over guardianship of my older niece while my younger niece goes to live with my dad. My fiancé and I have two boys and another on the way but cannot go on any longer seeing how unfit my sister is. I know that its going to cause problems but I don't think that there is any other way of helping the girls because their parents refuse to help themselves. They are content either not working or working less than 20 hours a week. I know that her boyfriend has anger problems and they have had problems with domestic violence in the past, what would be the best route to go to help my nieces??

Hey hunnn, you need to try to get evidence, and you need to show it to the police, and tell then the extreme of the complaint, you need to remind them of the domestic disput charges, and explain everything.. then you need to go protective services, you need to make them reasure you that you're going to get them.. you should also have you husband and parent(s) go with you as primary witnesses..
I hope things work out for you, and your neices.. you should also look up child protective services on the internet, and see what more options you have.. cause I am NOT an expert, and haven't been trough this.. I also recommend calling the police before you go..
AGAINNN, GOOD LUCKK! :D

For one thing why would your boyfriend be the one for guardianship and not you? Another is WHy split the children? It seems your plate is full at this time. Is there another direct relative that can take them both? Another thing is who is going to watch the children during this 5 days trip out of town?

You don't "go" places - you make phone calls. Please don't answer questions on the legal boards unless you have research skills, life experience, education. This is not a board where anyone can guess at the answers. This board, in particular, is not a chat board and the "Hunn" part is inappropriate.
And Califdad raises some very good questions which need to be answered before anything more final can be said.
