I get my period every month, but they are irregular, meaning that they are not every 28 days or so. My periods range from every 31 days to every 38 days. Each month is different. I have been off birthcontrol for 10 months now and have not had any luck quite yet! Is my ovulation period different from "regular" periods? I heard that a woman ovulates between 10 to 12 days after the day she starts her period. Is this true? If so, does it apply to my case? I had an abortion two years ago, and I wonder if this has something to do with it. Please help me! A million thanks!

Nani,

For a 27 year old woman 10 months of trying to get pregnant is not unusual.

Ovulation occurs 14 days before the first day of your period. In a regular 28 day cycle this also happens to be 14 days after your last period. If your cycle isn't 28 days and is irregular then you won't be able to predict when you are ovulating from the date of your last period.
If your abortion was a standard dilatation and curettage without complication, the termination will not be responsible for your irregular cycles. as far as I am aware.

There are various reasons you may experience irregular periods. You may be a variation of "normal" - i.e. there's nothing wrong, or you may be having anovulatory cycles - meaning you are menstruating but not ovulating. There are other less common things that can cause irregular bleeding. To get a diagnosis you must see a Dr.

Dr.Wood,

A million thanks for your insight on my problem. In January I went to my gynocologist and mentioned to him that we wanted to start trying our luck getting pregnant. I did some tests and mentioned to him that I was irregular. I don't think he gave it much thought. Its just quite frustrating after so many months, although I am aware that its not the longest time. I know others have taken much longer. So I won't complain too much. I'll make an appointment to see him again and mention this anovulatory cycle possibility. Thanks again for your help!

Couldn't you try an ovulation test as they are available in the shops nowadays, then you will know when you are ovulating and can try to conceive at that time :)

I would recommend using a basal body thermometer. Start charting your temps every morning to get a better grasp on when you are ovulating. As soon as you see the spike from normal temp for you you will know it is time to get busy trying. My doc reommended that my DH and I have sex every other day starting from when your period stops until you start again. This gives sperm optimal time to build back up, and guarantees that you won't miss ovulation whenever it does happen!
