People smoke because they are addicted. A better question would be why do people start smoking in the first place.

Because the contents of cigarettes are habit forming. That with a combination of several other things. Like oral fixation, and nervousness. Some think it looks cool.
Most smokers will tell you that they WANT to quit, but it's simply too hard to. I quit smoking over six years ago myself. You just have to be totally committed to succeed.

1) it looks grownup
2) it's addictive
3) it's relaxing
4) it looks cool
5) your parents smoke
6) peers smoke
7) it keeps your hands busy
8) it's a time-out thing

I can tell you why I started smoking. I started smoking cause I use to chew tobacco in high school. My girlfriend at the time said if you don't quit chewing tobacco I will stop kissing you. So I stopped but I went through nicotine withdrawal. I told her I needed a dip she said HERE smoke a cig so I did.
But I quit like 6 years ago after I was out of breath from walking up the 2 flights of stairs and then spit up this brownish gray Flem ball!

I can't think of one good reason to smoke, not one.
I started because all my friends were doing it,I was a text book teenager.
I still smoke.

Hi, All!
I'm going to add one more here...
The possibility that the person hasn't ever gotten over their oral fixation from childhood.
Just a thought...
Thanks!

I started smoking about 5 years ago and every once in awhile I will quit just to prove that I can but I like it for the time being. I've been smoking continuously for the past 8 months and I am thinking about quitting again, but everyday without a cigarette I still want one. It is hard. I started it just out of curiosity and have stuck with it.

I quit for two reasons. The first one was because we just had our first child/son. I didn't want to be around him smelling like smoke. The second reason was because I was sick of the poor condition my lungs had gotten into to. I would get winded just walking up a flight of stairs.
The only thing that I miss about not smoking is that I cannot have one of my favorite cigars. Cigarettes, I don't miss at all.
If you want to quit, there are several "helpers" that can make you be successful.
