A little background info: It's been a very long time  since I've been considered single and I'm back in school for my masters. There's a guy in one of my courses, it's a lab/lecture (so small class size) and we've never talked but I can feel him look at me, not in a creepy way, :o but in an interested way... anyways, this class is competitive, no one really talks to anyone outside their study group. What do I say or do to show I'm interested? I'd like to keep school stuff out, which doesn't leave much to talk to a complete stranger about.

I'm all for the blunt approach, if you can handle it.
Absolutely out of nowhere, approach him and tell him you see him looking at you, and you think you like it, but you aren't sure if he really is. So is he?
If he is remotely interested and has a clue he will take the easy out and fess up. If your bluntness scares him away, he's really not so much a man now, is he? Give him a door to walk through and see if he takes it.
Why tip toe around? I have ALWAYS preferred to know reality. If I have no chance and I'm completely mistaken, tell me. Ill get over it. Ill move on. I'm happily married now... but until that point I pretty much took risks when it came to relationships. I have always said my failures when I tried don't haunt me so much... it's the times I didn't take a chance that keep me up at night.
If he can't handle that approach, he's probably not ready for you.

Heh, I know I can't do it... but just walk up and say hi. See how he responds. Maybe on the way out of the class, make eye contact and then say hi or bye as you are leaving. Then if nothing happens you aren't too embarrassed. If nothing happens, it'll at least open the door for future possibilities. He'll at least know you don't mind him. :)
