I am a disabled military vet. I have been married to my wife for over 3 years, Ever since I have been married my wife's mother hates this. She really dislikes me and has finally found a way to make my like hell. I was injured in iraq 4 years ago and have been going to a civilian pain management doctor.
My wife's mother has made up a huge story and called my doctor. My wife's mother told the doctor that my wife has over dosed and was arrested with medication bottles in her possession with my name on them. The whole story was false that she told the doctor. I found all of this out today when I went in to get my refills. The doctor talked to my wife's mother for a long time and gave her medical information about me from my records.
This was a female doctor that I have been seeing for 3 years and now she released me from her medical care today due to all of this story. I now have gone with out my medication for 3 days and one of the medication I am on is xanex and if abruptly stopped like I have been forced to do may lead to my death.
I clearly see this was a violation of my HIPPA rights by the doctor talking about my medical information to my wife's mother but my question to any one is what can I do as a course of action to the doctor for this violation and how can I go about it. Thank you for any help in this situation. Capt.Bragg US ARMY purple heart, ret.

Firstly, quitting Xanax abruptly won't make you die. Rest assured there. The ONLY drug that quitting abruptly kills is alcohol.

It's HIPAA, not HIPPA

Now, how do you know that the doc gave your MIL info about you?

If you want to bring a course of action, you contact your local medical board. Be assured that you are not going to gain anything monetarily, but that your doc may just get off with a warning if found to violate HIPAA.

If she did tell MIL, yes it is a violation, unless you had given permission for info to be given to family members, I know when I signed up for a new doctor Thursday, one of the boxes was do I allow info to be given to family members.

So you write doctor a letter complaining, and you file a complaint with the AMA about the actions of this doctor.

Then use the wallet, go to another doctor,? Why are you not using the VA ?
