I had the same problem, on a Maytag Gas Dryer Model #MDG5500, 8.8 error code. I took a heating pad and placed it on the front panel. After 10 minutes on high, I removed the pad and "to My Surprise" the Dryer panel was "blank" and it started as normal... This has got to be magic. I'm sure there is a loose connection in the soldering on the circuit board but until this "fix" no longer works, and I'm ready to buy a new board at $160. Or more, I'll use the heating pad.

Hi! soonerorl8r, welcome to AMHD:)
I'm sure there is a loose connection in the soldering on the circuit board but until this "fix" no longer works, and I'm ready to buy a new board at $160. or more, I'll use the heating pad.An .8.8 display on the LCD could be a low voltage under load at the Black 42 lead to neutral OR an internal problem in the control board...
This seems to be a common problem with this type of dryer, with the same fix (Heating pad):

If it's in a cold basement you could consider a space heater.
Not sure why cold enters in as a factor. Your price is in the mid-range, as I have seen from $126 to $350 USD. Board swap is fairly easy.
