Where do styes come from and if you get one how do you get rid of it?

Styes form from bacteria. You can get them easily if you wear contact lenses or touch your eyes without washing your hands. You could possibly get it from old make up especially if you are mixing your make up with water.

I have had styes before and the best things to do are to use warm compresses like a hot towel over your eye lid about three times a day and clean your stye with an alcohol pad or witch hazel. Do not "double dip" if you use a cotton swab to clean your eyelid.

also do not wear eye make up until the stye is gone! if you keep using the same make up while the stye is there it will spread to the other eye or come back after the last one goes away. If you have used eye make up already, throw it away now and buy new make up after the stye is gone. If you are wearing contacts throw them away too and wear your glasses until the stye goes away. If you keep wearing them you can get an eye infection. This has happened to me before so if you wear contacts and/or make up trust me on this!

Also if your stye is large see an optometrist. Do not pop it yourself.

Hi, angiepearson!

I remember one inner-city school where I taught a number of years ago. I developed styes in both of my eyes.

The only thing that I could figure was, that it was so filthy there, and from handling things like stair rails, etc, that other people had handled, was the reason for me getting the styes.

So, I would think that maintaining a clean environment as well as watching what you touch that has been touched by others, could be a factor, especially if you might rub your eyes on a frequent occasion.

Thanks!
