My single stage gas furnace with A/c t stat has the usual RC RH C W Y G O B wires and I understand which each does. My new programmable t-stat is for a heat pump so I am not sure if I need to jumper any terminals in order for it to work. Stat has 2 terminal blocks right side: Y2 F X2 W1 S1 S2 and Y2 W2 S1 S2 left side terminal block RC R Y G B and RC R O Y G B... is RH the W1 of the heat pump stat?

Your first stat is a HP stat too because of O & B. It's also a 1H/1C heatpump/convention stat (1 stage heat and cool).
On the second stat R is Rh(old) and USUALLY Rc & Rh are jumped.
Remember to set the conventional stat to "conventional"
Usually the terminals are dual labeled and the operation is selected in the stat. Thus Rc R Y G B looks plausible. And so does Y2, W2, S1 and S2.
S1 & S2 go to a sensor. (outdoor/indoor) optional in your case.
B sometimes is power. Sometimes it's labeled O/B. If power, then not needed if stat uses batteries.
You may need to jump W & W1
And also Y to Y2
This guarantees the second stage heating and cooling to behave as a single stage heating and cooling.
Can you post a link to manuals for both or at least model #'s.

The first state has a common terminal and the programmable one does not. Where do I land the common wire?

If the second is battery operated, then don't use it.
Owner's manual is here: http://www.americanstandardair.com/HomeOwner/Docs/ACONT800_Series.pdf
Probably the install guide is too.
This looks ike a re-braded Vision Pro Stat. See: Honeywell VisionPro Thermostats - iaqsource.com (http://www.iaqsource.com/category.php/?category=1624)
Which should have a C terminal.
All of the VP manuals are at the above link.
