How can you tell if the my car needs a battery or alternator replacement?

Recently, ALL the dashboard lights came on and the car wouldn't start after I turned it off. I can start it again after a few tries in 30 or so minutes.

When all the lights on the dash light-up, it is normally a sign that the alternator is failing. Most likely, the alternator brushes have worn down too far and need replacing.
