Do you think it was grits?
It's made of corn flour, or corn meal, but more grainer then usual. It kind of had a porridge look to it, but in the South they pu lots of cheese and bacon or ham with it. Delicious. I know in Budapest, they eat it a lot but is called something different, but basically translates to grits.
