Tom how are you today? I have to relocate my whirlpool tub from my orig. location. Will the overflow work as the vent for the drain? The drain line will travel about 10 ft. before I can tie in to the 3 in. waste line. And also, my drain lines for the vanities, can it by any chance dump into the 3 in. waste line by putting in a sanitary T in my 2 in vent for my toilet? In other words can I dump my vanity drain line into the 2 in. vent line that comes up the wall from my 3 in waste line? Hope I didn't confuse you like I am. Thanks Tom. Hi Dave ;D, Welcome back! Nice try, but if you use the tub waste and overflow for a vent you will be venting through the water in the trap seal. The suction can pull water out of the seal and allow sewer gas to escape. Not a good idea. :o If the three inch drain line has a major fixture discharging through it, like a toilet, then you can not tie to that. :-/ Code forbids discharging a major fixture past a unvented minor one for the same reason given above. However the vent line off the toilet sounds like a winner. :D If you have the room to do it that's the route I would go. I would use a 2" combination wye and 1/8th. Bend rather then a sanitary tee to tie into the line. Stick with it! ;) Tom

OK! Tom, now I am really confused. Let me try to better describe myself so maybe I can understand what you are telling me. My toilet is seting against the south wall of my bathroom. The closet flange comes out the bottom at aout a 45 angle and will head north under the floor. I am going to vent the toilet as the line passes under the wall the toilet sets against with a 2 in. vent. Now the tub will be setting about 8 ft to th south of the toilet. Can I tie the tub waste line 1.5 in. into the 3 in. toilet waste line if I tie in ater the closet flange but before I vent the toilet? Or do I have to find a way to vent the tub drain before I tie intothe toilet waste line. Im not real clear on the vanity drain line dumping into the 2 in vent stack either? The vanitys are vented up the wall directly behind the traps on the sinks. Sorry Tom I am pretty confussed on this one! Thanks Dave.

Now I'm confused, If your lavatory is vented then the entire bath group is vented.  Why are you venting the toilet?  You ask about the lavatory drain.  If you tie the tub into the lavatory drain then your group will be vented and you won't need a separate vent for the stool.   However if you're set on running a separate vent for the toilet then tie the tub downstream from the toilet vent.  By the way, make your tub drain line 2" instead of 1 1/2". Tom! My two vanity drains are each vented in the wall. I tied the two vents together and went through into the attic with 2 in. vent. At the point were I tied the two together I joined with a 2x2x1.5 tee. 2 in. into the attic and stubed 2 in. over by the toilet to pick up the toilet vent when I vent the toilet up through the wall. Will this be OK? The sink vents and toilet vent will all be tied together and into the attic with a 2 in. vent. Thanks Dave

Dave, If your lavatorys drain into the same drain the toilet does then the toilet is wet vented and doesn't require a separate vent. Why are you venting the toilet? What am I missing? Tom
