I was in the Navy back in 1984--Hawaii, I was married and my wife and I had a child. I had trouble and my wife ask me to leave. I went back to the mainland and lost contact with her and my son. Recently I had to pay six thousand dollars for back child support. I found out then that my son was adopted my his step father without my consent. Could she do that?

I would go to Court and get the paperwork - how old is the child and when was the child adopted?

Signed consent from both parents is needed and "sometimes" the adoption cancels the support order.

How much support have you paid over the years?

Only six thousand?

Sounds to me like the support order stopped when the adoption happened.

And yes, that CAN happen. Your consent was probably sought via newspaper ads looking for you.

Frankly, your child is 23, there's nothing you can do about it now.

If you'd REALLY wanted to contest the adoption, you would have stayed in your child's life, one way or another.

You're worried about this now? It's been 23 years! Where have you been? How could you not know about this? Why didn't you contact them when your child was young, pay support, get visitation?

There's a name for people like you, it's called deadbeat dad. Be grateful you got away with only paying $6,000. Also be grateful that another man was willing to raise the child you abandoned.

Synnen is right - you could have been served by publication. It didn't cross my mind because you were in the Miitary and rather easy to find.

My error!

Don`t condem this guy unless you know the whole story. It`s not just about child support and some mothers move around just to keep the child away from men that do really care... Fight it buddy
