How can I connect a thermostat to a heat bulb, so the bulb turns on and off automatically?

I have to ask, for what? Would blinking be objectionable? Do you need a more constant temperature. What temperature? Is a fixed temperature OK?

Are you possibly using the heat bulb to keep water lines from freezing, like in a well pit? The do make devices that you can plug into a 120v outlet then plug any 120v applience(including heat lamps) into the device and set the temp where you want it. We usually use these in houses that are going to be vacant for a while to let people see if the heat is working in the house. The way we use them is this... plug the device into an outlet, plug a lamp into the device and set the device at about 50 degrees. If the furnace fails, and the temp gets below 50, it will kick the lamp on. The lamp is located in a window so that a neighbor can just drive by and see that the house is warmer than 50. If they see the light on, they know the temp has dropped below set point and they need to call a tech to check the furnace. I know I have rambled on, but I'm just trying to explain how this device works, and that it will work for your needs.

Do you possible want the bulb to turn on just right at freezing and shut off above freezing? Take a look at the second item, theromstatic outlets http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/controls.shtml

Okay, just remembered what the device we use is called. It's a Honeywell Winter Watchman. But its only good for up to 120 watt bulb at 120v. But I'm sure there are similar products that will fit your needs. Here's a pic of the watchman.

The winter watchman only works when the temperature falls below a set point. Usually these are used to light a light bulb or light fixture to notify your neighbors that your furnace has quit working when you are on vacation. A very handy item.
