Especially in the winter when it is cold, my beagle has a cough. He is fine until I come outside and he gets excited to see me. Then he coughs a lot. Sounds like he is trying to clear something from his throat. Any advice would be helpful, thanks and God bless.

You will need an examination by a vet for this one unfortunately.

Common causes of coughing in dogs include:
Kennel Cough
Heart Murmur
Intestinal worms
Allergies
Collapsed Trachea

There are less serious causes for coughing, but get the dangerous ones ruled out by a vet before you stop worrying.

How old is your beagle? Is it overweight?

I noticed you said he is excited to see you when you come outside. Is he an "outside" dog? How cold is it?

He is about 12 years old and is maybe 5 pounds over weight. He don't have this problem in the warmer months. Just when its cold like below 20 degrees. But if its 20 in early morning he coughs and about 25 in the afternoon he don't do his coughing.

Yes, he is always outside, has a doghouse off the ground, an old carpet to keep him warm. I try to keep fresh water for him changing it 2 or 3 times a day. This week it has been low in the teens and high around 23 to 25. I tried a few times to put carpet above his door so to keep him warmer, but he tears it off. Also tried to put straw in the doghouse but he pulls it out by morning. An old piece of carpet is the only thing he will allow in his house.

He should go to the vet.

My dogs cough just because they are excited when we go for a walk. Later there is no cough.

Sounds like the cold air is effecting his lungs... Kind of like when you inhale a lot of cold air at once while running...

... Not a real big fan of outdoor dogs, especially the short haired kind...

Please don't leave your dog outside.
