I need to replace the starter on the 2000 Craftsman tractor model 917.270824. Is this a fairly easy process? Do I have to remove the fly wheel? Can you please provide instructions? --

Hi,
A bit of searching revealed that you have a 46 cu. in. Briggs opposed twin though the Sears manual pictures a V-twin Vanguard.
If this is indeed the case, it will appear that flywheel removal is necessary. This however not the case. You will need to remove the cable to the starter and the eight bolts holding on the blower housing(flywheel screen also on some.) Then there are two places beneath the flywheel with recesses that will allow access with a 1/2" open-end wrench to loosen the two bolts that point downward to hold on the starter. The bolts must be put through the holes of the new starter before slipping it into place to fasten it.
