There was movie I saw, back in like the early 70's. The story line was a prisnor of war camp along the German/Swiss border or German/Austrian border. The POW's build a glider and launch it from the ridge of the top floor roof, using a tub that is dropped from several stories to provided the accerlation power to lauch the glider. The glider glided into friendly territory carrying a very import person. Any ideas? Can't remember who played in the movie as I was very young at the time. But, would love to find the movie.

Could it possibly be 'son of lassie?'

Son of Lassie (1945) (http://us.imdb.es/title/tt0038097/)

It is the Birdman. I just read your link. Thanks so much. I saw this movie once when it came out in 71. I was ten then, and have always wanted to see it again. Hopefully I can know find a copy. Thanks again.
