I am a 16 year old boy and on the acne drug amnesteem. I just went for my bloodwork Thursday and went to the doctor Saturday. The doctor told me he would not perscribe me the medicine because my sgpt in my liver was way too high 697. At first he thought it could be an error, so I went and had it retested Saturday and it was at 731. I told him I had been weightlifting Mon. Wed. and Fri. He did not seem to think it was the problem. He is going to send me to a liver specialist to see what the problem is sometime this week. I have not had any symptoms of a bad liver. I feel fine just as if I was normal. I am not an alcoholic or have taken any steroids and or sports drinks. I have a normal diet and have not ate any bad foods and have not had an upset stomach since the beginning of my course when I was doing nothing in the weightroom. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi SR33,

I also took the drug you were on and I had to do a lot of research on it as well:

According to Amnesteem (isotretinoin) medical facts from Drugs.com (http://www.drugs.com/mtm/amnesteem.html)
Generic Name: isotretinoin (oral) (EYE so TRET I noyn)
Brand Names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret

The weightlifting has nothing to do with what is happening with your liver. Amnesteem is a powerful drug and when you take it, your liver has to break it down and clean it out of your system. Taking Amnesteem is doing the same thing to your liver as drinking copious amounts of alcohol. So if it's hurting your liver, you need to get off it.

One thing that can help your liver however is milk thistle. You can buy this at health food and bodybuilding stores.
Liver Health - Milk Thistle - Liver Detoxification (http://heartspring.net/detoxification_liver_health.html#liver)

Now, weightlifting CAN make your acne worse. My brother and I have both been through this whole and acne thing and it sucks. I know. But weightlifting increases the hormones that can cause acne.

Maybe when your liver recovers your doctor will let you take this drug again. But also, this drug has a lot of other side affects such as sever depression, achy muscles, people have even killed themselves on this drug before. If you can find some way not to take it, that's probably best. And, while you are on this drug, stay away from anything with vitamin A, it will cause the symptoms to be worse.

Look up weightlifting and acne on Google and see what kinds of results you get, that may be helpful too.
