Hi,

I have two mini daschunds (male & female) both have been fixed. For the most part they are best friends however, sometimes they get into vicious fights over toys. The fights don't last very long and afterwards they lick and make up. My question is what is the best way to break the fight up? I don't want either one to get hurt, they fought the other day and both have puncture wounds on their ears. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Des

An excited ''Ut, ut, ut!'' and clapping your hands may get their attention just like fighting kids. Another attention getting is shaking a tin can with pennies in it. A spray bottle of water or a squirt gun will stop almost anything. You can even add a little vinegar or lemon juice.

It is unusual for a male and female to really fight. Were they removed from their mother and the rest of the litter before 6 weeks?

And thank you for spay/neutering them. I wish more pet owners were as responsible. In addition to reducing behavior problems and eliminating unwanted liters, it reduces their chances of getting cancer later in life. With good car, Mini Dachshunds should be loving companions for many years.

I got the male (Charlie) at eight weeks of age and the female (Ginger) at nine weeks. They are four months apart. For some reason the Charlie will instigate by taking the toy Ginger is playing with and then she gets mad, or Charlie will hog new toys and won't let her play until he is finished or gets distracted by something else.

It is important that you do not give them signals or cues that they are equal. This is a huge mistake we often make when we have several dogs. They are not children. There is a pack mentality and a leader. Some fights are normal and they need to be worked out, however if you are continuing to have any bloodshed I would highly recommend getting a trainer to your home to help smooth out this wrinkle!
A really good book is the "The Dog Listener".

Yes, the best of the 50's.

Should have read the post more carefully. It is the Dog Whisperer that I think is an advance to the rear.

My first thought was to delete both posts, but I think it is more honest to admit I blew it than to hide it.
