The heat pump outside does not turn off after the indoor fan unit turns off. The heat pump can be turned off by turning off a circuit breaker inside the house labeled "heat." After the indoor fan turns off and the heat pump continues to run, a slight humming sound that changes in intensity comes from the indoor fan unit. When running, the heat pump is still heating the house just fine.
