I tried fixing a leaky drain in my kitchen sink. I have a double sink (one sink having a garbage disposal). The brass pipe from the garbage disposal sink leads into the main drain at a tee just above what I have learned is a p trap. This brass pipe had a smal slit in it.

After replacing the brass piece I noticed the drain was leaking at several points (mostly slip joints in the main drain). Instead of re-adjusting the slip joints, I thought I might have a clog. So I snaked the drain going through the drain plug in the p trap. I ran water I still found leakage.

I reset the slip joints and tightened the p trap drain plug several times. Still leaking and hard to see just where, I decided that I needed professional help. My garbage disposal had seen better times. So, I called a plumber requesting a relacement of my disposal and repair of my leak.

I was not home to see the work. The plumber replaced my insinkerator disposal with another one (insinkerator pro series) and told my daughter-in-law that he couldn't find any leak but that he would reair a leak in the hand held hose.

I plainly saw water coming from the p trap plug area. It may have been coming from above and just seemed to be coming from the plug. I didn't see that it would be necessary to point to that area. I suspected that I may have over tightened the drain plug in the PVC p trap and possibly cracked the thread area. I felt that the PVC portion of the drain my have to be replaced. That is why I called the plumber in.

How should I proceed? I was charged $500.00 for the work performed. My daughter-in-law said he was there for forty five minutes.

The first thing to do is call the Better Business Bureau. File a complaint, it won't do any good but maybe it will put something on file about his company, At Home Depot in Texas the Insinkerator Pro Series would have cost you around $145 plus tax and labor of about $75. And the leak would have been repaired.

In addition to the advice Letmetellu gave you let me add that you may have crossthreaded the plug in the trap. Teflon tape the threads and try again. I too think you were over charged for shoddy work Good luck, Tom,
