I cashed three checks at a local bank. They now say that they over paid me by $261.00. I did not sign for the cash or get a receipt. I am not sure what to do. They said they are going to take the money out of the check writer's account. I said they did not mak ethe mistake so you shouldn't take it from their account.

That doesn't make any sense. Are you sure you're telling us everything? If they gave YOU more cash than the check were written for, it would make sense for them to take the money back from YOU. And how did you not notice that they gave you so much more money than the checks were written for?

You don't have to do anything. It isn't your mistake. It is the bank's mistake. They have to rectify it. Do you still know the amounts the checks you cashed, or do you still have the cash (almost) in tact that they gave you for the three checks. In other words, can you check yourself if this the case, and if so, notify them and return the $26l.00. Otherwise, as I said, if you don't have that extra money in your purse or wallet, then it isn't your problem.

Something just does not sound right here. How could you not know that they gave you too much money, Any way I would say go to the bank and get them to SHOW you how they know for sure that money came from the three checks you cashed.

And why are they even telling you if they are taking the money from someone else's account?
