I have a ceiling fan that only operates on high speed. I assume it needs a new switch. I have tried to find a replacement switch without success. The switch has four wires coming out of it (black brown, purple, gray). The brown, purple and gray wires go into a sealed black box about 1 by 2 inches. Any help would be appreciated.

I doubt it is the switch that is the problem. What happens when you turn the fan to medium or low?

If you pull the chain to activate the fan speed switch, the fan will either run at high speed or off. Fan will not run on slow or medium speeds.

When you pull the chain to slow or medium, the fan stops? Sounds like a bad capacitor. But I suppose it could be a bad pullchain, though unlikely. Pullchains are available at any hardware store. See the links I posted above.

I am not at the home where the fan is at this time. As I recall, before removing the pull chain switch and capacitor ? Assembly, you would have to pull the chain 3 or 4 times before the fan would turn off - low speed, medium speed and high speed had the same effect (speed would remain on high. Then it would turn off on the 4th pull. I agree with you in that I don't think the pull chain and switch will fix it either. I think I need the switch and capacitor? Assembly. The big box stores carry only the chain and switch without the capacitor. Perhaps I should contact Harbor Breeze.

I would first check and see if the capacitor is wired directly into the pullchain. If it is, it is likely the culprit. If it is not, it may very well be the switch or something else.

The switch is wired directly into the capacitor. Brown,gray, and purple wires go into capacitor (into an epoxy type material). Red and gray wire come out of the capacitor. Do you have a suggestion as to where I can purchase this part?
