I am charged with theft under 5000.00. This is the incident. I was asked by a homeless acquaintance to meet and drive him to the bottle recycling depot. He loaded the trunk with a garbage bag full of tins. The he moved boxes of items I had in the back seat to the front passenger seat. I asked him what he was doing and why and were he was going to sit. He opened the rear drivers side door, went around the corner of a building and returned with 2 wrought iron patio chairs shoving them into to the open rear car door. He slammed the car door and I said what are you doing? Then a man, yelled from his upper apartment window "Where are you going with those chairs, they're not yours. My acquaintance took off and I yelled back to the man I was going nowhere and was going to return them. Now I realize I am involved with a theft and not sure what the man yelling would do if I got out of the car. So I drove away panicking and scared and 1 block away I removed the chairs between 2 dumpsters. I drove past the crime site to go home and the man recognized my car and wrote down my plate numbers. I got home changed to night attire and had a feeling the police would be at my door. Sure enough 30 minutes. Later I was asked to go with them in an unmarked police car to the station. I went and on arrival thought I would be printed and photos in my p.j's. But instead signed a promise to appear for processing, and a promise to appear in court. Also I gladly signed a restriction to not have contact with acquaintance. I was told the chairs belonged to the town Mayor, who I have known most of my life. I admitted the act was wrong no matter who but I took fright to flight regardless. I need to know if these charges will hold to the crown prosecutor. I have no criminal record, am a retired nurse, 56 years old and have always been a caring person. Anyone please answer my situation. Thank you.
