My cousin just bought a house built 1957 has 2 wire romex plastic sheathed(hot&neutral) no ground and a breaker panel type that I have never seen before so we were talking about replaceing panel setting up grounding system for future added circuits. He wants to replace a lot of receptacles that have been painted over many times. What is options for this without having to rewire entire house ? Thanks in advance for any input

The only option available to protect each receptacle circuit with a Ground Fault device, either a circuit breaker to protect the complete circuit, or a GFI receptacle at the beginning of a circuit to protect the remaining receptacles downstream.

Some receptacles may not be wired so one GFI can protect them, and will need their own GFI receptacles.

Any new 3 wire receptacles protected by a GFI device will need a label stating " No Equipment Ground".

None of the GFI protected receptacles with no equipment ground will be adequate for devices such as surge protectors, as they need a ground to operate properly.

Too bad the home was not inspected before the sale, the rewire to modern wiring could have been included in the closing somehow.
