Once I've removed the shower handle and temperature control lever how do I remove the mixer valve that is inserted in the pipe? I would assume it pulls right out but it has been in for over 10 years and seem very tieght.

Do you mean the cartrdige inside the valve body or are you trying to totally remove the entire valve from the supply lines?

Each manufacturer is different but basically they enploy a clip that must be removed before you can pull the cartridge. Even with the clip out some will need a cartridge puller. Do you know the brand of the valve? Here is a picture of a Moen valve, the brass clip sticks up from the valve. http://www.moencartridge.com/Moen11.jpg

It not a Moen, not sure of brand but unit appears to be white plastic. It does have two small holed (one on each side) that appear a tool could be used to pull. Would home Depot have a puller tool?

Yes they would but some pullers are propritory and only work with that brand. You need to know what you have before we start buying a puller, it may not be needed. Can you post a picture?

Not right now but can later. I'd guess the unit is a Delta.
