I'm looking at buying my brother some plants to liven up his apartment for Christmas. However, he lives in a basement, and gets extremely limited sunlight.
I've heard that you can get full spectrum bulbs that will allow you to grow plants indoors, but I'm not sure if this is true.
Also, if I get him a few full spectrum bulbs, should I get him plants that prefer full sunlight, or should I get him plants that prefer shade? (I guess it would depend on his placement of the plant with respect to the location of the light.. )
I was thinking of getting him some chili peppers, some tomatoes, and perhaps some other veggies so that I can give him colour and some usefulness at the same time.
Oh, and where can I find full spectrum bulbs that allow for plants to grow under them? (not tube lights... light bulbs.. )

Hi, katieokell

I've heard that you can get full spectrum bulbs that will allow you to grow plants indoors, but I'm not sure if this is true.Yes it is true, here's one place: Full Spectrum Lighting, Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?keyword=full%2Bspectrum%2Blighting&langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053)

Here's one source online: LED grow lamp provides the right rays - Electronic Products (http://www2.electronicproducts.com/LED_grow_lamp_provides_the_right_rays-article-xhlap09-mar2006-html.aspx) and you should be able to find them at your local nursery.

Most , if not all garden produce plants like Pepper and toms will require as much light as you can give them, when you get to this link Clemson University : Extension (http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/indoor/) click on foliage or flowering plants to see a list that would do well in low light conditions.

I guess it would depend on his placement of the plant with respect to the location of the light.. You are correct.

If you are outside the States, let me know your location, and I'll see if I can locate them for you.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your help!
I live in Canada, so I guess my best bet would be Home Depot.
