Hi,

I wonder if someone can please help me. I am four months pregnant with my partners baby. He is American and I am British. He wants me to go to America so we can get married and have the baby in America which is wonderful and what I want but I have to think about my future with my baby and if for some reason, which I hope not, this relationship doesn't work out, where would I stand with returning back to the UK, with my baby.

I am due to go over to America on a fiancé visa and we will get married when I'm over there but I'm not sure if this will mean that I will have to give up my British passport? Will I? Or will I be able to have dual citizenship?

And if so what will my rights be with my baby if say things don't work out between my partner and me. As I am going over to be with him and have our baby, he will be the only reason for me to live in America but if we weren't together and I may want to return to the UK, what would my rights be, in taking my baby with me.

I hope someone is able to help me with these questions.

Many thanks.

You may have dual citizenship but naturalization won't be immediate. It takes at least 3- 3 1/2 years.

Your baby will obtain dual citizenship from parents. The baby's father will also have parental/custody rights, you cannot take the baby back to your country without his consent.
