On may 14,2009 I had a had a root touch up it had been 5 months since my last one .so I had plenty of dark roots , I let the stylist know I didn't want to use bleach so she used a high lift dye and toner ,my scalp was burning hurt for about a week, now I have extremely thinner hair tons of breakage, and losing clumps especially when washing, its been 6 months I have not done anything to my hair except wash .I am staying away from chemicals heat anything damaging,my hair still continues to fall out. Do you think my hair can ever recover from this?

My derm thinks I have traction alopecia ,because of a bad hair dye job twice in 5 months my hair is growing back but its very thin and breaks easily, I haven't done any thing to my hair in 7 months and its still breaking and falling out . My hair is so much thinner , I have probably lost 50 percent of my hair and its still coming out in clumps.do you think my hair can ever recover? If I care for it gently and lay off the dye?

For what consolation it will be, your hair is undoubtedly not "falling out." It is "breaking off". There is a distinct difference. If it breaks off, that implies that it will grow back. Hair "falling out" may or may not grow back. Yours will grow back. Continue to condition -- but use light conditioners to minimize breakage. Anything that coats the hair may cause it to break off.

As you found, high lift dyes are often much harsher than the "dreaded" hair bleach. I have instructed people that bleach done right is less damaging than high lift single process dyes.
